Fiscal sponsorship is a taxation structure which allows small nonprofit organizations to provide the tax benefits of established registered charity organizations to their donors without obtaining 501(c)(3) status themselves. This allows organizations like the Refugio Tinti to focus fully on their activities on the ground by outsourcing the administrative overhead to their fiscal sponsor. In this way, we can ensure that 95% of your donation are actually used for the purpose you choose while we are still able to ensure that it is tax deductible as allowed by law. The landscapes in Costa Rica‘s south are dotted with monocultures, above all oil palms and cattle pastures. Monocultures are easy to maintain and seem on the surface to be economically efficient. The The problem lies in the fact that monocultures work diametrically against the circularity of nature. The resulting devastating consequences are the loss of ‘ecoservices’ which maintain climate stability and biodiversity, they provide clean air, clean water, fertile soils and many other services essential for our survival. It’s wishful thinking that technology can provide all these services without functioning ecosystems. However, these losses are about to present humanity with its greatest challenge to date.

To address this challenge, we are developing concepts to convert monocultures into profitable, biodiverse forest gardens. In these designs, we aim to follow the structures and patterns through which naturally-grown forests sustain themselves. As a result, they have a positive impact not only on the environment but also on communities and local economies.

Of course, no two plots are alike, which is why this blueprint needs to be adapted to the specific circumstances.

Benefits for nature

While the nutrient content in the soil in such a design is constantly regenerating, forest gardens have countless positive effects also above the soil’s surface: the flowers of the support trees provide food for bees and other pollinators. These, in turn, increase the yield of the crops and attract birds that nest in their branches and keep pests under control. The organic mulch from the regularly pruned trees protects the soil from drying out and eroding, while slowly releasing nutrients for the crops. In addition, the plantation‘s resistance against all sorts of diseases is significantly increased through the wide range of plant species.

Benefits for the economy

Forest gardens can be profitable. We compared the average revenue and profits of a monoculture and our forest garden design, based on estimates of the prices effectively paid by intermediaries in Costa Rica, and found that forest gardens can be even more profitable than monocultures. We are happy to share this breakdown upon request.

In addition, most products can also be further processed into value-added products which may add to income significantly.

Benefits for society

Well designed forest gardens also address some of the most pressing socioeconomic problems in rural areas:

High unemployment is counteracted by the higher demand for labour, and as a pleasant side effect, working in a forest garden is also much more enjoyable than on a monoculture – a fact that our own employees in the Refugio can confirm.

These food gardens can involve the local population even in the process of tree and plant production: Above all, the growing of the robust nitrogen-fixing trees and Mexican sunflowers can be outsourced to everyone who owns a garden, creating additional sources of income.

And last but not least: following up with the production of value-added products opens up new labor markets, leading to the division of labor and to cooperatives that, in turn, promote community cohesion.

Los paisajes del sur de Costa Rica están salpicados de monocultivos, sobre todo de palma aceitera y pastos para el ganado. Los monocultivos son fáciles de mantener y parecen, a primera vista, económicamente eficientes. El problema radica en que los monocultivos funcionan diametralmente en contra de la circularidad de la naturaleza. Las consecuencias devastadoras son la pérdida de “ecoservicios” que proporcionan aire limpio, agua limpia, los suelos fértiles, un clima estable, la biodiversidad y muchas otras cosas esenciales para nuestra supervivencia. Estas pérdidas están a punto de plantear a la humanidad su mayor reto hasta la fecha.

Para hacer frente a este desafío, desarrollamos conceptos para convertir los monocultivos de aceite de palma en policultivos rentables y biodiversos. En estos diseños, pretendemos seguir las estructuras y los patrones a través de los cuales se sostienen los bosques cultivados de forma natural. Como resultado, tienen un impacto positivo no sólo en la comunidad sino también en el medio ambiente.

Por supuesto, no hay dos parcelas iguales, por lo que este proyecto debe adaptarse a las circunstancias específicas.

Beneficios para la naturaleza

Si bien el contenido de nutrientes en el suelo en un diseño de este tipo se regenera constantemente, los jardines forestales tienen innumerables efectos positivos también sobre la superficie del suelo: las flores de los árboles de apoyo proporcionan alimento para las abejas y otros polinizadores. Estos, a su vez, aumentan el rendimiento de los cultivos y atraen pájaros que anidan en sus ramas y mantienen las plagas bajo control. El mantillo orgánico de los árboles podados regularmente protege el suelo de la desecación y la erosión, mientras libera lentamente los nutrientes para los cultivos. Además, la resistencia de la plantación contra todo tipo de enfermedades se incrementa significativamente a través de la amplia gama de especies de plantas.

Beneficios para la economía

Los jardines forestales pueden ser rentables. Comparamos los ingresos y las ganancias promedio de un monocultivo y nuestro diseño de jardín forestal, con base en estimaciones de los precios efectivamente pagados por los intermediarios en Costa Rica, y descubrimos que los jardines forestales pueden ser incluso más rentables que los monocultivos. Además, la mayoría de los productos también se pueden procesar en productos de valor agregado que pueden aumentar significativamente los ingresos.

Beneficios para la sociedad

Los jardines forestales bien diseñados también abordan algunos de los problemas socioeconómicos más apremiantes en las zonas rurales:

El alto desempleo se contrarresta con una mayor demanda de mano de obra y, como efecto secundario agradable, trabajar en un jardín forestal también es mucho más agradable que en un monocultivo, un hecho que nuestros compañeros de trabajo en el Refugio pueden confirmar.

Estos huertos pueden involucrar a la población local incluso en el proceso de producción de árboles y plantas: sobre todo, el cultivo de los robustos árboles fijadores de nitrógeno y los girasoles mexicanos (boton de oro) puede subcontratarse a todos los propietarios de un huerto, creando fuentes adicionales de ingresos.

Y por último, pero no menos importante: el seguimiento con la producción de productos de valor agregado abre nuevos mercados laborales, lo que lleva a la división del trabajo y a las cooperativas que, a su vez, promueven la cohesión comunitaria.

Große Landstriche im Süden Costa Ricas sind von Monokulturen bedeckt, vor allem Ölpalmen und Rinderweiden. Monokulturen sind pflegeleicht und scheinen, oberflächlich betrachtet, wirtschaftlich effizient zu sein. Ihr Problem allerdings liegt darin, dass sie alle natürlichen Kreisläufe unterbrechen. Die daraus resultierenden Folgen sind der Verlust von „Ökodienstleistungen“: stabiles Klima, Artenvielfalt, saubere Luft, sauberes Wasser, fruchtbare Böden, und vieles andere, das für unser Überleben unerlässlich ist. Diese Verluste sind im Begriffe, die Menschheit vor ihre bisher größte Herausforderung zu stellen.

Um dieser Herausforderung zu begegnen, haben wir Konzepte entwickelt, Monokulturen in profitable Waldgärten mit hoher biologischer Vielfalt umzuwandeln. In diesen Konzepten folgen wir Strukturen und Mustern, durch die sich natürlich gewachsene Wälder selbst erhalten.

Den Bauplan eines unserer Konzepte haben wir in einer kurzen Animation illustriert:

Natürlich gleicht kein Grundstück dem anderen, weshalb dieser Bauplan auf die konkreten Gegebenheiten zugeschnitten werden muss.

Vorteile für die Natur

Während sich der Nährstoffgehalt im Boden solcher Waldgärten beständig erneuert, haben diese auch über dem Boden unzählige positive Wirkungen: Die Blüten der Stützbäume bieten Bienen und anderen Bestäubern Nahrung. Diese wiederum erhöhen den Ernteertrag und locken Vögel an, die in ihren Zweigen nisten und Schädlinge unter Kontrolle halten. Der Mulch der regelmäßig zurückgeschnittenen Bäume schützt den Boden vor Austrocknung und Erosion und versorgt die Pflanzen langsam, aber stetig, mit Nährstoffen. Zudem wird die Widerstandskraft der Plantage gegen Schädlinge und Krankheiten durch die Vielfalt der Pflanzenarten deutlich erhöht.

Vorteile für die Wirtschaft

Waldgärten sind profitabel. Wir haben die Gewinne unseres Konzeptes berechnet und festgestellt, daß diese im Vergleich zu Monokulturen sogar noch rentabler sein können.

Nutzen für die Gesellschaft

Gut gestaltete Waldgärten wirken sich auch auf einige der dringlichsten sozioökonomischen Probleme positiv aus:

Der oft grassierenden Arbeitslosigkeit in ländlichen Gebieten steht die höhere Nachfrage nach Arbeitskräften in Waldgärten gegenüber. Dazu, als angenehmer Nebeneffekt, ist die Arbeit in Waldgärten auch wesentlich angenehmer und gesünder, als auf einer Monokultur – eine Tatsache, die unsere eigenen Mitarbeiter bestätigen können.

Das Konzept der Waldgärten kann auch die lokale Bevölkerung, vor allem im Prozess der Baum- und Pflanzenproduktion einbeziehen. Der Anbau der durch Stecklinge einfach vermehrbaren Bäume und Pflanzen kann an jeden Gartenbesitzer ausgelagert werden. Dies schafft Nebenerwerb und stärkt den Zusammenhalt der Gemeinschaft.

Und nicht zuletzt: Die mögliche Produktion von Mehrwertprodukten, verbunden mit entsprechenden Workshops, kann neue Arbeitsmärkte eröffnen, was wiederum zu Arbeitsteilung und Kooperativen führt, die sich ebenfalls positiv auf das soziale Gefüge auswirken.

The Refugio Tinti is located near La Gamba de Golfito, a very diverse community of about 700 inhabitants. As everywhere, not only the achievements of our modern life style are shown here, but also its challenges, which are noticeable in the environment, the economy and the social structures. However, improvement can only take place with all players collaborating and all areas addressed simultaneously.

A series of community interviews showed that the biggest expense of nearly all inhabitants is food. As methods of food production are some of the most crucial elements in restoring the ecosystem, we developed several interconnected projects that – directly and indirectly – address this issue alongside many others, such as health, economy, education and social cohesion.

This resulted in the plan to establish a permacultural education and consultation center in the school of La Gamba, primarily to facilitate regenerative cultivation of lands within the community. This should improve food security, health and quality of life in general, while simultaneously allowing the environment to recover.

In addition, workshops and specific professional training courses will be held in the community hall and in the Refugio Tinti. These are intended to provide residents with the opportunity to learn not only about regenerative agricultural methods, but also to acquire new skills useful to the community. Through these skills income can circulate within the community and may stimulate a local economy, which in turn would contribute to social empowerment.

At the core of the proposed project is the transformation of the local school grounds of about one hectar into a permaculturally inspired, productive and sustainable system, which the children can observe and in which they are free to participate. Simultaneously, we will organize regular workshops for the entire village on subjects such as sustainable food cultivation techniques, methods to generate income through value-added products and vocational training. Along the way, the establishment of a microcredit system can enable villagers to implement entrepreneurial ventures based on skills learned in the workshops.

Having interviewed over 10% of all village inhabitants so far, we found overwhelming support for this project. Furthermore, the Costa Rican Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MINAE), the mayor of La Gamba, the National Parks Foundation, and the principal of the school have already provided letters of support for the project.

Immediate and long-term goals

Our first step is to encourage a variety of small initiatives to make production and consumption local and sustainable (e.g., locally tayloring compostable school uniforms, building household composting systems, offering permaculture workshops, enabling waste separation etc.). This can be started with little upfront investment. 

Once sufficient funds are available, we will implement the elements described above over a period of four years. This includes the transformation of the school grounds, regular vocational and permaculture workshops, consultations and assistance for village inhabitants to apply these techniques on their land, and the establishment of a village market to encourage collaboration and support the local economy.
